Unlocking Potential: Overcoming the Trap of 'Should'
LifeLife LessonsProductivityMotivationCreativityPersonal DevelopmentPhilosophyPsychology
The word 'should' often acts as a mental roadblock, hindering our ability to solve problems and achieve our goals. It fosters a deficit mindset, where we constantly measure ourselves against idealized expectations and perceive ourselves as failures. This mindset stifles our capacity for higher reasoning by providing a pre-installed explanation for our shortcomings: we are simply 'bad' at controlling our natural inclinations. This prevents us from exploring the underlying reasons for our behavior and finding effective solutions. To break free from this cycle, we must replace 'should' with 'want'. By reframing our goals as desires, we align our motivation with our actions. We must identify the results we seek to achieve and understand the reasons behind our resistance. This involves acknowledging the logical reasons, even for non-compliance, and recognizing that conflicting impulses can be navigated with insight and ingenuity. Ultimately, overcoming the 'should' mindset allows us to approach challenges with curiosity and problem-solving skills, rather than self-criticism and judgment. It empowers us to take control of our lives and pursue our goals with greater clarity and effectiveness. By understanding the reasons behind our actions and desires, we can make informed choices and create a more fulfilling life. The key is to treat our non-compliance as if it has a logic behind it, and once we get our higher-reasoning onto the case, we’ll start to see things in a very different way. When we exit the stalemate of ‘should’, we can finally take Become less bad off the to-do list. We start to see our conflicting impulses as something we can navigate with insight and ingenuity, rather than as more proof that we’re failing yet again to do things well enough. Best of all, we get to recognise that there’s no inner, ungovernable monster standing between us and the things we want to do.
